The Da Vinci Code And Bible Comparison Controversy
April 27th, 2017

The End of our Time What the Tribulation Means

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown has raised many questions about the validity of the Bible and whether or not the Bible is true. There is no question that Dan Brown is an excellent story teller and has done an incredible job of making the story seem like truth. However, there are many discrepancies within the story that are not consistent with the Bible. This book was written within a genre of literature called historical fiction. This is where fictitious characters and events are placed within true history. Generally, it is clear what is fact and what is fiction but in the book The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown does a great job of blurring those lines between fact and fiction.

There is much incorrect historical information in the novel, but the main question is about the misinformation about Christianity. There are four main discrepancies that the book displays about the Bible and Christianity.

The Bible is a lie.

According to Dan Brown, the New Testament as it is known today was finalized at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD under the leadership of Constantine. The character in the book called “Teabing” says that the Bible is a product of man, not of God. Christian apologists have come out against this making certain that people understand that the Bible is true. Josh McDowell, a well-known Christian apologist makes the point that “all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Jesus was married.

In the book, the characters talk about how the greatest cover up in human history is the marriage of Jesus. The book states that not only was Jesus married but also that he was a father and the Holy Vessel that is talked about in the Bible is really Mary Magdalene. She was said to be the chalice that bore the royal bloodline of Jesus Christ. The truth about Mary Magdalene is that Jesus cast seven demons out of her and then she became a follower and friend of Jesus. She was present during Jesus’ trial, sufferings, crucifixion and burial. Mary Magdalene was also the first at the empty tomb and the first one Jesus appeared to after his resurrection. Dan Brown takes these assertions further and says that Jesus had intended for Mary to lead the church but that Peter rose up in opposition, himself to lead the church. He also asserts that the Holy Grail is not the chalice from the Last Supper but is Mary herself.

The truth is that Jesus did not have a wife. The first time the idea that Jesus married Mary Magdalene appeared in the 9th century. The idea came to the forefront of popular thought with the 1980’s book “Holy Blood, Holy Grail”. In fact, there was recently a lawsuit filed by the authors of that book claiming that Dan Brown stole their idea. In truth, none of the earliest documents many any mention of Jesus being married to anyone. There is no mention in the Bible by any of the letter writers " the Bible simply does not even address the issue of Jesus having a wife.

Jesus is not God.

The book establishes that Jesus was a good man but not God. The Council of Nicea is referred to by Dan Brown as voting on the subject to determine whether or not Jesus was God. In actuality, the council soundly determined that Jesus existed eternally like the Father and is God. This is summed up in the Nicene Creed that is commonly used in worship and churches in modern day Christianity. Everything Jesus said and did points to the truth of his divinity. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”

Rituals lead to God.

Dan Brown’s book centers on ancient documents and organizations that secret rituals lead to God. The Priory of Sion that is quoted and used as the proof for this in the book is in actuality a fraud. The author admitted so before he died. “The Code” centers around the secrets hidden in the Gnostic writings which were rejected as false by early Christians, and centers around ritual acts that members o the secret societies perform. Judaism and Christians have always denounced this practice but instead assert that Jesus Christ leads to God and is God’s only provision for sin. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

These are the four main misconceptions surrounded around the book “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown. This book is full of riddles, puzzles, mysteries and deceit and is an excellent book. However, the Bible is the way to salvation and it is not written in code.
