Why Have A Persantine Test
Discount Drugs
Persantine cardiolite is a form of stress test to test how well your heart is functioning. Your doctor will be able to use the results from your persantine cardiolite test to discover how well your heart is working.
What is a persantine cardiolite test?
Your doctor will be able to use a persantine cardiolite stress test to discover whether you are suffering from artery disease, or you are suffering from coronary blocked arteries. The stress test is designed to make you heart work hard so that any weaknesses can easily be seen.
You will only be given persantine if you are unable to exercise for any reason. Most people would have their heart tested by exercising on a treadmill or an exercise bike. Persantine is actually Diprydamole and is used to widen the arteries without exercise.
Cardiolite is a radioactive tracker which can be used to see how well your heart is picking up oxygen. The cardiolite will be picked up by a special receiver to spot how well your heart is working.
If the heart isn't getting enough oxygen because of narrowed or blocked arteries then there will be less tracer in these areas. Your doctor can then find out which areas of the heart aren't getting enough blood.
A persantine cardiolite test won't need you to work on a treadmill or do any form of exercise. The blood pressure and heart rate will continuously be monitored.
The cardiolite and persantine are injected by an IV catheter. It's not very painful it's just a little uncomfortable. If you have a hairy chest then you might need to be shaved so that the electrodes can get proper contact.
Preparation
Testing can sometimes take 2 day as they may want a control scan. For the first day of the test you should fast after midnight the night before. You also shouldn't take: - caffeine - theophylline - pentoxyphylline
In particular you must not have caffeine within 24 hours before the test.
Why have a persantine cardiolite test?
You need this test to work out how well your heart is functioning and to assess whether you have any restrictions around your heart. There are some important things that you need to do before the test:
- Do not smoke 6 hours before the test is due to begin - Do not eat or drink 6 hours before testing - If you have asthma or lung disease make sure you make your doctor aware of these before the test. - Do not have caffeine 24 hours before the test o Be careful when drinking fizzy drinks as many of these also contain caffeine. - If you are diabetic tell your doctor
During the Persantine cardiolite test
The test will require several electrodes to be placed on your skin to monitor your heart's activity. For this you might need to have your chest shaved. Persantine will be injected while you are lying down and typically takes 4 minutes, if you notice any pain you should notify someone immediately. A few minutes after this cardiolite will also be administered through the same IV catheter.
