Nizoral shampoo, which is also known under its generic name of ketoconazole, is used successfully in the treatment of infections that are produced by fungus or by yeast. It works in two possible ways. First, it may destroy the yeast or fungus or secondly, it may prevent these from developing.

The active ingredient of Nizoral shampoo is also available as cream. In this form, it is used in the treatment of athlete's foot, ringworm of the body, ringworm of the groin, seborrheic dermatitis, and sun fungus and yeast infection of the skin.

Nizoral shampoo is available in two concentrations. Ketoconazole 1% is recommended for getting rid of dandruff while 2% is effective in the treatment of sun fungus. Doctors may also recommend this medication for other fungus infections of the skin.

Over-the-counter Ketoconazole is offered in two dosage forms: topical and shampoo with a concentration of 1%. The types that require a medical prescription are offered in three dosage forms: topical, cream and shampoo.

Counter Indications of Nizoral Shampoo

Some health conditions must be reported to the health care provider before starting the treatment based on Nizoral shampoo. For example, the doctors must be informed about allergies to ketoconazole, miconazole, to other imidazoles or sulfites. Allergic reactions to other chemical agents must also be reported.

The effect of Nizoral shampoo on pregnant women has not been studied thoroughly. Some tests that have been performed on animals revealed that the active ingredient of Nizoral shampoo may provoke birth defects.
