Persantine thallium are two substances that can be injected into your blood stream to monitor how well your heart is performing. Using this test your doctor will be able to gauge how healthy your heart is.
What is a persantine thallium stress test?
A persantine thallium stress test is use to assess how healthy your heart is by monitoring how it performs under stress. Your doctor will also be able to use the results from these to decide upon your treatment options.
Your heart is actually a muscle which is responsible for pumping blood around your whole body. In order to do this it needs its very own supply of oxygen, sometimes these arteries can become blocked which would result in the heart not working as well. A persantine thallium stress test can be used to see whether or not this is the case.
Why should I have a persantine thallium test?
This test is very useful as it will be able to pinpoint where you are suffering from narrowed or blocked arteries. Your doctor can take the results from this test and use them to plan your treatment course.
Preparation for a persantine thallium stress test
If you suffer from asthma or lung disease be sure to tell your doctor as soon as possible. If you are taking medications for either of these conditions then you may simply have to stop taking them.
You should not smoke, or take anything containing nicotine four hours before the test is due to start. This includes nicotine patches. You also shouldn't eat 4 hours before the test will start.
What can I expect?
There are two separate tests in the persantine thallium stress test, however both can be done on the same day. Each test takes around one and a half hours, but you have to wait three hours in between tests.
Your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored throughout the test using an electrocardiograph. You may need to have your chest shaved so that the contacts can get good contact.
Persantine and thallium will then be injected through an IV line that has been placed into a vain in your arm. It takes around 4 minutes to have persantine injected, it's important to point out if you feel any discomfort when this is being injected.
After this thallium will be injected. Thallium is very slightly radioactive and so can be traced using special machines.
When you have had the trace done you can then leave and have something to eat. After this you will be asked to go back and have the trace repeated again. You will have more thallium injected, then you will have to wait for another hour and then you will have the trace done again.
It takes around 5 days for the results to be compiled and sent to your family doctor.
