Sleep Disorders

Metoclopramide, a medicine which is also known under the brand name Maxolon, is used for improving some of the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Such a symptom is the heartburn. Poor motility of the stomach and of the intestinal tract can also be treated by using this drug. The drug is also available as generic metoclopramide.

Its role is to support the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract, fact which furthermore leads to an improved intestinal transit. The stomach gets empty faster and the condition of the lower esophageal sphincter gets enhanced.

Removal of the Drug

After 72 hours, nearly 85% of the drug is eliminated from the body through urine. Out of the 85%, half of the amount is represented by free and conjugated metoclopramide.

Harming the kidneys

When the amount of drug that is eliminated gets smaller, it means that a certain quantity gets accumulated in the kidneys. Because of this fact, the doctors will adjust the dosage periodically. The treatment for gastro esophageal reflux disease must be followed for a short period of time.

Administration of Metoclopramide

This medication is administered orally. The tablets must be taken with a glass of water. Regarding the meals, people are recommended to take the tablets half an hour before eating. If possible, the patients are advised to take the tablet daily at the same time of the day.

Off the Label Usage

Some doctors use this medication as treatment for health conditions that are not listed on the label. Such health conditions are: hiccoughs, migraines, emesis determined by radiation, enhancement of lactation, and postoperative gastric bezoars. In addition, some health problems may become worse if the gastrointestinal motility becomes greater. In these situations, doctors may prescribe metoclopramide. These health problems include perforation and blood loss of the gastrointestinal tract, and epilepsy.

Maxolon and Chemotherapy

In order to avoid nausea and vomiting provoked by chemotherapy, the doctors will prescribe 2 mg/kg of Maxolon which is administered in 2 doses. The first dose is administered half an hour before the chemotherapy session and the last one 2 hours later. If the condition lasts, then 3 other equal doses are administered after 3 hours.

Interactions

This medication is able to interact with other drugs. Because of this fact, people are recommended to tell their health care providers what other drugs they are taking, before starting a treatment based on Maxolon. Otherwise, if people take a drug that interacts with Maxolon, the consequences may be very unpleasant.
