Maxalt tablets (also called Rizatriptan) are headache relievers. Studies have proven that it is extremely effective at alleviating the symptoms of a headache that is already in progress, but it cannot prevent migraine episodes fro occurring. Still, it has been helping millions of people who suffer from migraine for years, and continues to be a popular brand.
How it works
Maxalt tablets make the blood vessels around your brain area narrower, reducing chemicals that trigger headaches, nausea, and other migraine symptoms including light and sound sensitivity.
While Maxalt tablets are generally safe especially when taken as your physician prescribed, you may be allergic to it - this all depends on your current medical condition. In rare cases, Maxalt tablets may set off heart attacks, a stroke, and other side effects involving the heart. You should stay away from Maxalt tablets if you have had angina, problems with your blood circulation, any heart disease, ischemic bowel disease, high blood, or stroke.
Don't fret, though. You may still be able to take Maxalt tablets despite these risk factors. Your doctor may need to observe you more and adjust your dosage. You may be put under regular observation during treatment. Your physician may also administer your initial Maxalt tablet in the hospital, so that you can be treated immediately should you show side effects.
Safety measures
Before you use Maxalt tablets, consult your physician first. Discuss your health history. Remember that risk factors such as smoking, coronary artery disease, diabetes, menopause, extra overweight, high cholesterol, and high blood can change the way your body reacts to Maxalt tablets. Risk is especially higher in males and over 40 years old, and in females who have undergone hysterectomy.
Dosage and administration
Be sure to take Maxalt tablets at least two hours apart. Do not take more than 30 milligrams in a day. The best time to take Maxalt tablets is as soon as the headache kicks in, or immediately following the migraine attack.
This drug should only be taken according to your physician's orders - nothing more, nothing less. Do not self-medicate. Taking more (just because your headache seems more intense) may only make your condition worse. Follow the instructions to the letter. If you can, always take the tablet with a glass of water (preferably full). If unsure about dosage, call your pharmacist or nurse.
