Lotrel Medication: All You Need To Know
|
||||
|
|
Lotrel medication is a type of calcium channel blocker, which is capable of relaxing the blood vessels be widening them, and therefore facilitating better flow of blood. As an ACE inhibitor, it converts enzymes and keeps the body from hanging on to water (since water retention increases blood pressure). Lotrel medication (also called amlodipine and benazepril) is a very popular drug for hypertension, but is only administered when all other less radical methods do not work, because it may have serious side effects.
Can I take Lotrel medication?
Only your doctor can say for sure if you can take Lotrel medication. You will likely be advised against taking it if you are pregnant (or if you are planning to have a baby), because it can cause serious and potentially fatal birth defects on the child. That is why during treatment, you may be required to use birth control. If, for some reason, you suspect that the birth control failed and that you might be pregnant, tell your doctor right away.
Are there any side effects?
Yesand they can be serious, depending on your condition. That is why Lotrel medication is a last recourse, to be used only when all other methods fail. It may mess up your state of mind and reactions. You may have to stop driving performing other activities (such as operating machinery) that require alertness.
The side effects of Lotrel medication may not show right away - in fact, they may not manifest until after several months of treatment. The usual symptoms are diarrhea, heavy sweating, and vomiting, which can all cause you to lose water (dehydration). If unchecked, these symptoms can escalate to low blood pressure, kidney failure, or electrolyte disorders. That is why you should drink eight full glasses of water every day while you are on Lotrel medication.
Contraindications
Never use Lotrel medication if you manifest allergies to benazepril, amlodipine, or to other ACE inhibitors, including but not limited to the following: trandolapril (Mavik), captopril (Capoten), ramipril (Altace), fosinopril (Monopril), quinapril (Accupril), enalapril (Vasotec), perindopril (Aceon), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), and moexipril (Univasc).
Your body's reaction to Lotrel medication may also change if you have a kidney disease and/or if you are presently in dialysis), if you have liver disorders, if you have congestive heart failure, or if you have diabetes. Inform your doctor right away if you have these conditions, so he or she can adjust dosage or refer you to another drug.
