Obsessive compulsive disorder affects more people than you think. Thanks to medications like Luvox drug, you now have an ally. But is Luvox drug the right medication for you? Read on to find out.
How does it work?
Luvox drug (also known as fluvoxamine) falls under SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - a kind of antidepressant drugs. It works by treating chemical imbalance in the brain, which often causes obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). Just because you were diagnosed with OCD does not mean that you can automatically take Luvox drugs, though. There are other factors to take into consideration.
Contraindications
Luvox is safe when taken as prescribed by a licensed physician, but it should never be administered alongside other drugs such as pimozide (Orap), astemizole (Hismanal), cisapride (Propulsid), thioridazine (Mellaril), and terfenadine (Seldane). Luvox drugs should also never be taken simultaneously with MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitors like selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), and isocarboxazid (Marplan).
Some pre-existing medical conditions may also affect your reaction to Luvox drug. If you have a liver disease, a history of epilepsy or seizures, manic depression/ bipolar disorder, or if you have ever used drugs or had suicidal thoughts, your doctor may either (a) advise you not to take Luvox drug, or (b) change the dosage.
Proper dosage and administration
Luvox drugs should only be taken as prescribed - nothing more, nothing less. Your physician may change your dosage occasionally to make sure you get optimum results. On your part, try to take the drug regularly - at the same time each day, if possible. Closely follow the label instructions. The drug may not kick in until after one month.
Never abruptly stop taking Luvox without your doctor's consent, because doing so may make your OCD symptoms even worse.
Warning
Like most other antidepressants, Luvox drug may trigger suicidal behavior during the initial stages of treatment, especially in patients younger the 24 years. You may be required to regularly visit your doctor, at least for the first three months of treatment.
While Luvox drug can be taken y children who are diagnosed with OCD, it should never be taken by children who are diagnosed with depression. Pregnant and nursing women are also advised to stay away from this antidepressant, as it may affect the baby. A new management program may have to be put in place by your doctor during the course of your pregnancy to keep your mood stable.
