Macrobid Medication

Macrobid medication (also known as nitrofurantoin) is classified as an antibiotic, formulated to fight bacteria, specifically UTI or urinary tract infection. UTi is common among women because the female urethra is much shorter, which means there is not as much of a barrier to bacteria. Male UTI is mainly caused by any obstruction to urine flow, as in the case of prostate gland enlargement.
Does Macrobid medication have any side effects?
While Macrobid is generally safe, it may trigger allergic reactions in some patients. Call your physician immediately if you feel shortness of breath, chills, fever, cough, yellowing of the skin or eyes, chest pain, paler skin, numbness or tingling, unusual weakness, or diarrhea.
You should generally avoid antacids during treatment, unless your doctor allows it. You see, antacids have formulations that may make It difficult for your body to absorb Macrobid medication.
Is it effective?
Generally, yes. In fact, most patients already feel much better even before the UTI completely clears. However, as with all antibiotics, you need to take Macrobid medication for the full length of time your doctor prescribed.
Please note that prescribed does not cure viral infections like flu or common colds. It is formulated specifically for UTI.
What is the proper administration?
* You must take Macrobid medication faithfully according to your doctor's prescription. Each dose must be taken with a glass of water (full). Macrobid medication is best taken with either food or with milk.
* To start, just shake the liquid (oral suspension) and then carefully measure a dose with a dropper or a measuring spoon. Avoid using a regular table spoon. Don't' have a dose measurement device? Buy one from your pharmacist.
* Macrobid medication may be mixed with water, fruit juice, or milk to make it more palatable and easier to swallow. Remember to finish the entire dose right away.
Can I take Macrobid medication?
Some pre-existing medical conditions can affect your body's reaction to the drug -especially if you have acute kidney disease, and if your urination is too far in between (or if you are not urinating at all). Also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, anemia, G6PD deficiency (glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency), or any other kind of debilitating disease. Your dosage may need to be adjusted.
Your doctor may also order you to stay away from Macrobid medication if you are in your last month of pregnancy.
