Serevent, with its generic name salmeterol xinafoate, is a bronchodilator which works by relaxing muscles in the airways to help adjust the breathing process and make sure that it works in proper way. It is used mostly to prevent asthma attacks.
Salmeterol Information
Serevent is prescribed for the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, Serevent is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic (LABA) receptor agonist drug that is currently available as a property-device inhaler or as a metered-dose inhaler (MDI).
If it's used properly every day as prescribed, the drug decreases the seriousness of the asthma attacks, but like all LABA medications it can not provide relief to an asthma attack that has already begun, because this drug does not work fast enough to reverse symptoms. In this case, another faster-acting medication should be used.
Also, an overdose of Serevent could increase the risk of asthma-related death, so it is critical to use only the prescribed dosage of the medicine. Symptoms of overdosing include chest pain, irregular or fast heartbeats, convulsions, fainting, insomnia, or muscle cramps.
While taking Serevent, do not use other forms of long-acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonists. Some similar rapid-relief bronchidilatators like formoterol, bambuterol, and sustained-release oral albuterol could be useful.
Avoid using Serevent or let your doctor know if you have:
* Diabetes
* Liver disease
* Thyroid disorder
* Any seizure disorder, epilepsy
* Any drug or food allergy
* High blood pressure or any other heart disease
Serevent might affect pregnancy so tell the doctor if you are pregnant or if you intend to become pregnant during the treatment. It could also be harmful to a nursing baby although it is unknown whether this medication passes into the breast milk or not. This drug is not intended for children younger than 4.
The medicine shouldn't be used more than twice a day and the doses should be spaced approximately 12 hours apart with one in the morning and the other one in the evening. You should consider it as an overdosing warning sign if you think you need more than 4 or more inhalations daily or if you finish a 200-canister in less than 8 weeks.
Serevent aerosol inhaler must be shaken thoroughly before each use and it should be used regularly everyday in order to be effective.
