|
Rythmol, also known as Propafenone, is an anti-arrhythmic medication which adjusts the beats of the heart. It controls abnormal heart rhythms such as unstained ventricular tachycardia, helping the heart to work properly.
Rythmol Information
Propafenone decreases the excitability of the cardiac muscle cells by slowing the influx of the sodium into them. Rythmol has a direct action and is mostly metabolized in the liver. It is very important to talk to a specialist before taking Rythmol because the long-term side effects of the drug are unknown yet. This medication has different side effects that might disturb the natural balance of your body.
Although Propafenone is an anti-arrhythmic drug, an incorrect dosage could cause problems to those patients with heart diseases by developing new heartbeats or worsening the already existing irregular ones.
Before taking Rythmol let your doctor know if you have:
- liver or kidney disease
- any breathing disorders
- other heart diseases
- low blood pressure
- cardiogenic shock
- a low heart rate (less than 50 beats per minute)
If any of the conditions above are present you may not be allowed to take Rythmol or you may need special monitoring during the treatment. Also, the drug may negatively affect a developing fetus. Rythmol passes into the breast milk, so do not take it without talking to your doctor first.
How should Rythmol be used?
The drug should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes it. The recommended dose for an adult is 150 mg taken every eight hours and the maximum dose is 900 mg per day.
Propafenone can be taken with or without food but do not chew, crush or break the Rythmol capsules because they are formulated in special way in order to release the medication slowly into the body.
Doses of the medication shouldn't be missed but if you do miss one, take it as soon as you remember. Remember not to take a double dose if you missed one because overdosing is very dangerous causing dizziness, tiredness, fainting, slow heart beats, confusion, changing tastes, upset stomach, etc. If these symptoms appear too should avoid any hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery.
Immediately call your doctor if after taking Rythmol you experience any of the following side effects:
- infections, mouth ulcers, fever
- bleeding or bursting
- any chest discomfort
- any allergic reactions
- new irregular heartbeats or worsening the existing ones
- swelling of the ankles or of the legs.
