A Generic known as Quetiapine, Seroquel is part of a series of neuroplastics known as "atypical antipsychotics" which over the last two decades have become increasingly popular. This drug is approved to treat the acute maniac episodes in bipolar disorders and depressive episodes.

Uses of Seroquel

This medicine is an antipsychotic which works by altering the balance of certain chemicals that occur naturally in the brain. It is mostly indicated to treat schizophrenia, but it is sometimes used off-label as a sedative for those with anxiety or sleeping disorders, in autism, alcoholism, restless legs syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and Tourette syndrome.

Seroquel and other psychotropic medications (including all benzodiazepines) are not recommended by the National Institutes of Health to children for those under 18 because they have noticed that these teenagers are most likely to harm or even kill themselves after taking the drug.

Quetiapine has an antagonistic effect on the histamine H1 receptor which is responsible for the sedative effect of the drug.

If it is not taken properly, Seroquel develops a capacity for dependence. This drug is not currently classified as a controlled substance. The medicine also known as "Susie-Q" is most commonly abused in prisons because it can easily be prescribed as a sedative.

Originally available in 25 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg tablets, now also 50 mg and 400 mg tablets have been added in order to increase dosing flexibility.

Seroquel Side Effects

A potentially fatal side effect reported with Seroquel and other similar medicines, but rare in most of the situations, is neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) that usually appears if you have muscle pain, very high fever, and changes in pulse or in blood pressure.

This drug is also contraindicated if you have diabetes, are pregnancy, if you have Alzheimer disease, heart disease, or allergies to medicines and other substances.

Medicines like Hydantoins or Ketoconazole may interact with Seroquel, so before taking Seroquel talk to your health care provider.

Seroquel may cause:

- dizziness, light headedness
- upset stomach
- weight gain or weight loss
- paranoia

Avoid drinking alcohol or using medicines that cause drowsiness, and do not become overheated while you are being active or in hot weather.

Elderly patients might develop muscle movements that they cannot control and Seroquel may also raise blood sugar causing feelings of confusion, thirst, rapid breathing, or drowsiness.
