The class of drugs called cephalosporins include the semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic cefixime (branded as Suprax), which have the ability to treat and prevent infections caused by bacteria.

Suprax Information

Suprax, given orally, is about 40%-50% absorbed and can be taken with or without food. Its absorption increases when the drug is administrated with food. It is very important to avoid the medicine if you are allergic to either penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics in any form because severe reactions could occur.

The product is available in scored 200 mg and 400 mg film coated tablets and also in a powder for oral suspension (which provides 100mg/5mL when is reconstituted).

Suprax is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes, so as a result, many organisms resistant to penicillin may be susceptible to cefixime. This medication inhibits mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall and treats infections of the ears, throat, chest, urinary tract, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.

This medicine is active against most strains of the following organisms both in vitro and in clinical infections:

- graham-negative organisms
- graham-positive organisms
- Escherichia coli, proteus mirabilis
- neisseria gonorrhea (including penicillin's- and nonpenicillinase-producing strains)
- streptococcus pneumonia, streptococcus pyogenes
- moraxella (branhamella) catarrhalis (most of which are beta-lactamase positive)

Before prescribing Suprax, the doctor may perform different laboratory tests to make sure the treatment is effective against the bacterial infections as some bacteria do not respond to Suprax.

The usual adult dose for iinfections other than gonorrhea is 400 mg daily. If the patient has a kidney disease the dose may be lower. For uncomplicated gonorrhea a single 400 mg oral dose of Suprax is usually prescribed. A usual child's dose is 8 milligrams of liquid per 2.2 pounds of body weight per day.

Any overdose of Suprax is dangerous and usually the symptoms of an overdose include:

- nausea, diarrhea
- upper abdominal pain, vomiting
- blood in the urine

Suprax may increase the effect of anticlotting drugs such as coumadin and when it's used together with Tegretol, the amount of Tegretol in the bloodstream may as well increase.

The effects of the drug if used during pregnancy have not been fully studied so you must talk with your health care provider if you are pregnant or if you intend to become pregnant during the course of treatment. Suprax may appear in breast milk so it could affect a nursing baby.
