Levothyroxine, also known as L-thyroxine, is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. One of the common brand names of this medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration is Synthroid.
Synthroid Information
The synthetic hormone, Synthroid, is usually prescribed if your own tyroid gland is not making enough hormone, if you have a goiter (enlarged thyroid), certain cancers of thyroid, or if your thyroid production is due to certain drugs or disease.
It is thought that the effects of thyroid hormones are exerted through control of DNA transcription and protein synthesis. These hormones are very important because they regulate multiple metabolic processes and they have an essential part in the normal growth and maturation of bone formation and the central nervous system.
Synthroid is effective as supplemental therapy in hypothyroidism of any etiology and in the prevention of different types of euthyroid goiters (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, multinodular goiter, thyroid nodules).
If you take Synthroid to increase the amount of the thyroxine it is very important to take it regularly at the same time every day because you may need it for the rest of your life. The medicine should be taken in a single dose before breakfast because is absorbed better on an empty stomach. The adequate dosage depends on different factors including patient's age, body weight, cardiovascular status, and other clinical conditons such as pregnancy and other medications taken concurrently.
There are substances or foods that can interfere with absorption of Synthroid, such as iron supplements and soy products.
Synthroid may also have adverse reactions, such as:
- weight loss or weight gain
- palpitations, headache
- swelling of the legs and ankles
- changes in menstrual periods
- hyperactivity, tremors, sweating
- heart attack, hair loss, fever, irritability
- tachycardia, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction
- decreased bone mineral density
- abdominal cramps and elevations in liver function tests, vomiting, diarrhea
Synthroid is not dangerous for pregnant women or for nursing babies. But you should talk to your doctor before taking it if you are an older person, if you suffer from high blood pressure, or any types of heart diseases, angina (chest pain caused by a heart condition), or diabetes.
An overdose of the medicine can produce confusion, shock, stroke, coma, and even death. It is very important not to use thyroid hormones, including Synthroid, for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss, or for any female infertility which is not associated with hypothyroidism.
