The group of beta-lactam antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections caused usually by the graham-positive organisms include Tegopen, also known as cloxacillin (a semi-synthetic penicillin).

Tegopen exerts a bactericidal action that stops replication of microorganisms and inhibits the biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptides. Although Tegopen has a weaker antibacterial activity than benzylpencillin, it is devoid of serious toxicity except for in instances of allergic reactions.

The presence of some medical problems may affect the use of penicillins and delay the antibacterial action of Tegopen. So inform your doctor if you have:

* A history of general allergies or any allergy in general (eczema, hives, asthma)
* Hight blood pressure; congestion heart failure
* Cystic fibrosis; bleeding problems
* Stomach, intestinal or kidney disease
* Phenylketonuria
* Mononucleosis

The recommended Tegopen oral dosage form (capsules, oral solution) to treat bacterial infections is for adults, teenagers and children weighting more than 20 kg - 250-500 mg every six hours; and for infants and children weighting up to 20 kg - 6.25 to 12.5 mg per kg of body weight every six hours. The injection dosage form of the drug should be injected into a vein every six hours and the quantity should be the same.
Like any other medicines, Tegopen may also generate unwanted side effects such as:

* Severe abdominal or stomach pain
* Nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, diarrhea, different forms of gastrointestinal irritation
* Confusion, twitching, mental depression, lethargy, multifocal myoclonus

* Renal tubular damage and interstitial nephritis; puffiness or swelling around the face
* Vaginal itching and discharge
* Black or hairy tongue
* Convulsions; sore throat and fever; unusual bleeding and bursting

Avoid taking Tegopen or inform your doctor before beginning the treatment if you take any of the following drugs:

* Other antibiotics (erythromycin, tetracycline, minocycline, etc)
* Cholestyramine or colestipol
* Methotrexate; allopurinol; probenecid
* The drug may also decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills
