The generic name of temovate is clobetasol propionate. This product contains a steroid medication for external use only that can relieve itching, inflammation, and irritation of skin conditions.

Temovate Information:

When Temovate is used a part of the medication is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Large amounts of the medicine should be avoided because too much absorption can lead to unwanted side effects. This product should be used only for short-term treatments to avoid any complications.

Clobetasol propionate is a high potency topical corticosteroid that should not be used with occlusive dressings (tight wraps). Temovate usually is prescribed to treat diseases such as eczema and psoriasis, and sometimes is used in treating alopecia areata (hair loss caused by auto-immune diseases).

Temovate should be used exactly as prescribed by your health care provider and only used on the skin. Do not cover the affected area because the air must circulate to the affected area. Avoid eye contact with Temovate. This medication should be applied two times a day (in the morning and at night) and the treatment should not be used for more than two consecutive weeks (do not use more than 50 mg per week).

There haven't been reported any serious side effects of Temovate unless the product is being used in a large amounts for long periods of time. In this case you may experience:

- halos around lights, blurred visions
- irregular heartbeats, insomnia
- mood changes
- thinning of the skin, stretch marks
- reddened skin, numbness of fingers
- allergic skin inflammation
- excessive hair growth
- perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, striate
- folliculated, erythematic, hypo pigmentation

It is not known if Temovate could endanger a nursing baby so talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using the treatment because there are not adequate studies of the teratogenic effects of clobetasol propionate.

If it happens to miss a dose, apply the missed one as soon as you remember but do not double the dose of Temovate because it is not recommended. An overdose of this product is not likely to threaten your life. Vitamins, minerals, herbal-products, over-the-counter medicines, and other topical products should not be used at the same time you are under clobetasol treatment.

If Temovate is absorbed into the bloodstream over a prolonged period, it could cause disorders such as Cushing's syndrome.
