The active ingredient of Theo-24, theophylline, is a chemical relative of caffeine that is a member of the xanthine family. Theo-24 helps treat symptoms of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma.
Theophylline
The German biologist Albrecht Kossel first extracted theophylline around 1888 from tea leaves and it was chemically identified in 1896 by Wilhelm Trouble. The first clinical use of the drug in asthma treatment came in the 1950's.
In Theo-24, theophylline is structurally classified as a methylxanthine and works by opening airways and relaxing smooth muscle that encircle the tubes and blood vessels found in the lungs. It can also be found in tea, in trace quantities.
Some of the main actions of Theo-24, theophyllines are:
- increase blood pressure and renal blood flow
- has some anti-inflammatory effects
- relaxing the bronchial smooth muscle
- increasing heart muscle efficiency and the heart rate
Swallow the Theo-24 capsules or extended-release tablets with water at regular intervals, taking care to not crush or chew them. When taking this medicine avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine-containing beverages like tea, coffee, cola, and foods containing theobromine (like chocolate). Also smoking tobacco or marijuana may affect the level of theophylline in your body.
Any viral infection could make the usual dose of Theo-24 act like an overdose, as many over the counter cold medications contain significant quantities of caffeine. Taking too much Theo-24 for a long period of time may cause nausea, restlessness, convulsions, irregular heartbeat, and even death.
It has been proven that Theo-24 inhibits TGF-beta mediated conversion of pulmonary fibroblasts into myofibroblasts in COPD and asthma. It may also reverse the clinical observations of steroid insensitivity in patients with COPD and asthmatics (in general the ones who are active smokers). Theophylline could prove to be the first substance to improve the clinical response to steroids in smoking asthmatics.
It is important to know that elderly patients are at a greater risk of experiencing serious toxicity from Theo-24 because of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic changes that appear while aging.
Some adverse reactions may appear while taking theophylline:
- headache, insomnia, vomiting, nausea
- diarrhea, increase in heart rate
- cardiac arrhythmias
- intractable seizures (which can be lethal)
- irritability, restlessness
- transient diuresis
- fine skeletal muscle tremors
- hypokalemia, hyperglicemia
- supraventricular tachycardis
- ventricular arrhythmias with hemodynamic instability
- atrial fibrillation or flutter
- hypotension shock
- disorentation
This supplement should be taken with extreme caution in patients with seizures, disorders, Cardiac arrhythmias (not including bradyarrhythmias), or active peptic ulcer disease.
