Casodex Bicalutamide represents a treatment based on hormones. This treatment is known to be highly effective in prostate cancer. There are more than one treatments based on hormones. The doctor is able to tell which one suits better the condition of the patient.
The Way It Works
The production and the action of the hormones in the body are influenced by the treatments that are based on hormones. These substances are created in the body and have the role to manage the activity of the cells and organs.
The prostate cancer requires a certain hormone named testosterone in order to get larger. The glands that make this hormone are the testes and the adrenal glands. The lining of the cancerous cells contains some proteins that are called receptors. The composition of Casodex Bicalutamide is comparable to the one of the testosterone. It obstructs the testosterone and stops it from attaching to the receptors found in the lining of the cancerous cells. In the absence of testosterone, these cells develop slower or they stop developing at all. The size of the tumor may actually decrease.
Administering Casodex Bicalutamide
This drug is available in a tablet form. It must be administered once a day. There are two concentrations available: 50 mg and 150 mg.
Starting the Treatment
Prostate cancer may be treated with Casodex Bicalutamide even if metastasis is present. This means that the tissues and organs that are found around the prostate also contain cancerous cells. The treatment may be based only on this drug or it may include this drug, along with surgical intervention and/or radiotherapy. When metastasis is present, Casodex Bicalutamide is administered along with other hormonal-therapy medicines like goserelin, triptorelin, leuprorelin and buserelin. All these medicines obstruct the creation of a hormone by the pituitary gland. This hormone is named leuteinising hormone and determines the creation of testosterone to increase.
If the prostate cancer is found in an early stage, the drug may be administered only for a short period of time, in order to avoid the burst of the tumor. The symptoms may aggravate at the beginning of any treatment based on drugs that decrease the activity of the pituitary glands.
What Are the Side-Effects?
The most serious side-effects include breast tenderness and even gynaecomastia, as well as hot flushes, itching and dryness of the skin, and nausea. Men may also experience a lowering of the sex drive and even impotence.
