Cytoxan is the trade name of the chemotherapy drug, Cyclophosphamide. The drug is used for the treatment of a variety of cancers. The list of diseases treatable with this drug includes Breast Cancer, Non-Hodgkin's disease, Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Ovarian cancer, Bladder cancer, Bone and soft tissue sarcoma, Rabdomyosarcoma, Neuroblastoma and Wilm's tumor. Does Cytoxan chemotherapy have any side effects?

Cytoxan chemotherapy therapy is intended to slow the growth of cancer or curb the reoccurrence of cancer in post-operative patients by inhibiting the growth of the faster growing cancer cells and ridding the body of these cells. This process of Cytoxan chemotherapy is not without side effects, however. The Cytoxan chemotherapy also attacks the normal faster growing cells of the human body as well. This causes the typical hair loss and mouth sores associated with chemotherapy treatments. The treatment also effects the cells produced by the bone marrow, the white and red blood cells and platelets. While the Cytoxan chemotherapy therapy is scheduled over time to allow regeneration of healthy normal cells, the patient can still expect a decreased ability to stave off infection, a limited oxygen carrying capacity in the blood and a decrease in the blood clotting platelets, necessary to stop bleeding. For these reasons, patients who are using Cytoxan chemotherapy will feel physically weakened and will suffer from lowered immune systems.

Cytoxan chemotherapy has the additional effects of decreasing the appetite, changing the way tastes are perceived, nasal congestion, irritation of the bladder and changes to the menstrual cycle. To decrease the negative side effects of these drugs, it is recommended that the patient drinks plenty of water in the twenty four hour period following treatment, regular use of an alcohol free mouthwash and avoiding exposure to sunlight. It is also recommended that the patient use a sun block with an SPF level of at least 15 and protective clothing if exposure to sunlight cannot be avoided during Cytoxan chemotherapy.

Treatment with Cytoxan chemotherapy may also result in cardiac and lung toxicity, increased risk of other cancers, SIADH syndrome or allergic reactions. It is to be noted, however, that these sides effects are relatively rare.

Should I stop taking Cytoxan chemotherapy because of the side effects?

Though these side effects may seem quite harsh, it is very important that the patient maintains the schedule of Cytoxan chemotherapy. Virtually all of the side effects are temporary and their severity will differ by dosages and the individual patient. It is vital that the patient receives the full dosage at the scheduled times for the medication to be effective as a treatment for cancer so being well informed as to side effect management and keeping a close connection to one's support group is vital. A patient receiving Cytoxan chemotherapy treatment should remain in steady contact with their health care provider to assist with support and management of side effects.
