Generic Drugs

Sometimes it may be difficult to give tablets to a child. For these situations, drugs that are available in a dosage form of syrup have been created. Clarinex, which is one of the most popular medications used in the treatments of allergic reactions and severe hives, makes no exception. Mainly, it is used for the health problems that have been mentioned before. However, the doctor may consider that the drug can be used for other conditions, too. Clarinex Syrup comes as a clear orange liquid with a concentration of 0.5 mg/1 ml deloratadine in a 16 ounce glass bottle. The bottle must be kept at room temperature - between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius and must be kept away from light.

What Does Clarinex Syrup Do?

The precise cause of allergies is still unknown, even though the scientists have performed many tests in this direction. What it is known is that certain substances are identified by the immune system as dangerous things. When this happens, a substance named histamine is released into the blood. Histamine is responsible of all the symptoms that appear next: sneezing, breathlessness, runny nose, itchy throat and watery eyes. At this moment Clarinex syrup becomes useful. As it is in a group of drugs called antihistamines, its role is to block the effects that are determined by histamine.

Clarinex Syrup Is Not To Be Used If…

Children who develop an allergic reaction when taking Clarinex syrup must avoid this medication in the future. Women, who are pregnant, prepare to get pregnant or who are breast-feeding must also stay away from this drug, as it may harm the fetus. Also, the patients who are allergic to food, medications or other substances are recommended to look for medical advice before starting a treatment which is based on this drug.

Administering Clarinex Syrup

The dosage depends on the age of the patient. For patients aged 12 or more, the recommended daily dose is of 2 full teaspoons. Children aged 6 to 11 require a dose of 1 full teaspoon. Children aged 12 months to 5 years must take ˝ teaspoon while the ones aged 6 to 11 months should take 2 ml or 1 mg each day.

In Case of Overdose

The most important effects in overdosed patients include somnolence and increased heart beat rate. Fatal effects have been observed in rats after raising the dosage at more than 250 mg/kg. Smaller concentrations do not seem to produce life-threatening effects.
