Cytotec induction refers to the use of a drug known as Cytotec, or under its generic name - misoprostol, for inducing the labor in pregnant women. This drug has not been tested thoroughly for this purpose. However, it is approved by the Food and Drugs Association for use in the treatment of other health problems. As long as the drug is approved by the FDA, there is nothing that can stop the obstetricians from making Cytotec induction. This action is known as "off label" use of a medication.

The Dangers of the Cytotec induction

What people should know is that Cytotec is found in a different category. It is not used "off label". Using this drug for induction of labor in pregnant women is, in fact, "on-label contraindicated". However, there are many obstetricians that ignore this. The excuse of the doctors who use this drug in order to induce labor to pregnant women is that off-label medication is used all the time. Out of 10 organizations that approve or disapprove medication in the United States, only one of them considers that the Cytotec induction is a safe process.

Reasons for Performing Cytotec Induction

Obstetricians prefer this drug because in low doses it is exceptionally effective. Some doctors admit that they have used this medication on a great number of women. The pregnant women did not even know that the drug that was being administered to them is in an experimental phase. Other doctors that perform Cytotec induction even fear that this drug might be pulled out of the market. For an instant, this would seem the right decision. Only that this medication is efficient in the treatment of other health conditions where such severe complications are not possible. This prevents the medication from being pulled out of the market.

From the Hospital to the Court

In countries such as United Kingdom and United States, women who have suffered a uterine rupture after Cytotec induction sued the obstetrician. The goal of these women is to stop this practice from going on. The risk that is taken by the doctors is enormous, and unfortunately, there are many obstetricians who use this medication.
