Hypnotic Issues
January 7th, 2009

As with any type of professional help, some things are good and some not so good. With hypnosis, the mind is given suggestions to help a person overcome some type of problem. To ensure you achieve your goal, whether to gain confidence in public, stop smoking, alleviate pain, or lose weight, you need to work with a qualified hypnotists or hypnotherapist. By choosing someone unqualified, you are setting yourself up not just for failure but additional problems. As you will discover in this article, certain hypnotic issues can be avoided simply by choosing the right professional.

For starters, a specific type of suggestion known as the "aversion suggestion" is risky. This particular suggestion is given to emphasize negative aspects of a specific habit, again smoking, overeating, lack of self-confidence, and so on. Think of it this way, if you were to have a vivid imagination of getting lung cancer because of smoking and you convince yourself this will happen, how do you know if the negative subconscious was a part of the equation should you actually develop lung cancer?

Instead, to avoid hypnotic issues, the suggestions should always be positive, providing affirmation for the desired result. Typically, aversion suggestion is something used for only special occasion and even then very, carefully. In addition to this, another hypnotic issue has to do with false memories and regression. Sometimes, a fully trained hypnotherapist will hypnotize a person, using regression as an objective for achieving results. For a highly trained professional, this would be considered acceptable but he or she must understand false memory risks.

What you want to avoid is working with a professional who cannot distinguish the difference between guiding and leading suggestions. What happens is that with fantasy ability being increased, the wrong type of suggestion could conjure up old memories that simply do not exist. Sadly, there have been many cases over the years of people reporting molestation or some other devastating event that never happened all because an unqualified hypnotist used regression without having a full understanding of its power. The consequences of this have been horrific, ranging from broken families to lawsuits.

Another potential problem with hypnosis is that for people dealing with pain, rather then immediately turn to hypnosis to find relief, it is essential that the individual determine the cause of the pain. Once a firm diagnosis has been made, then hypnosis could follow, providing an option for pain management, not the other way around. Of course, a real hypnotist or hypnotherapist would never use the power of suggestion through hypnosis for trying to deceive someone or make a person behave inappropriately.

Remember, hypnosis is indeed a powerful tool, one that can have incredible and positive results. However, if the professional does not follow the principles and disciplines, disaster can strike. In addition to this, you have the responsibility to guard yourself in a trance-like state. The best way to do that is to understand the type of suggestion used and by working with a professional that you trust
