Ideomotor Questioning And Hypnosis
January 7th, 2009

Ideomotor questioning associated with hypnosis is the subset of auto-questioning. In other words, this set consists of techniques and methods that get information directly from the subconscious mind. With this information, appropriately formulated suggestions are made that can lead to change by confirming to the subconscious mind the acceptance of such suggestions when given. Without doubt, the subconscious mind is a mystery. While the conscious mind is what we are aware of, the subconscious mind is what makes us do much of what we do.

When it comes to reaching the mind through hypnosis, there are both indirect and mediated methods for communication. One that we find to be the easiest is called ideomotor questioning. Known as a smaller set or sub-set of techniques used to question the subconscious mind, this works. The techniques used are a part of a much larger group of auto-questioning, which relates to any, and all methods for getting information from the subconscious mind.

For instance, one option for ideomotor questioning is called the Chevreul pendulum. Keep in mind that ideomotor questioning is different from normal hypnosis techniques, and can be fun and invigorating. However, while this method is usually easy, there are times when it can be challenging. Regardless, the information generated is usually very beneficial. For some people, poking and prodding the mind means uncovering many interesting things, making it seem almost dangerous. For this reason, if ideomotor questioning is done by someone other than yourself, it should be done only by a qualified and reputable hypnotist or hypnotherapist.

You see, if you look at an autobiography, this is written by an individual about him or herself. Ideomotor questioning is also done by the individual, about the individual. Therefore, it is important that you stick with it. Remember, you are not going to be divulging any type of information that could cause you a problem. In truth, the subconscious mind will lean toward being overly protective so this is not an issue. If anything, the subconscious mind will be on the conservative side. Now, can you make yourself uncomfortable using ideomotor questioning? The answer is yes but it will not cause any danger or damage.

We mentioned the Chevreul pendulum, which we now want to address. This was first discovered by Anton Chevreul during the 18th century. With this, he would use a pendulum, as a means of magnifying ideomotor movements. Keep in mind that the pendulum does not have any power alone but it can be used to magnify body movements, which are in fact the result of a thought process.

To use the Chevreul pendulum method, all you need is a few things. First, you will need a piece of thread or string about 10 inches long. Take this and slip it through a regular metal washer, like the kind you would get at your local hardware store. Next, place a piece of paper in front of you. Next, draw symbols on the paper, which will become your answers. This would include a cross, an x, and a circle. The x will represent "yes", the cross "maybe" or "unknown", and the circle, "no. The goal with this is that your subconscious mind is going to answer for you. Whatever you do, avoid moving the pendulum purposely, instead allowing the mind to move it for you. Then, you would ask a question and holding the pendulum over the paper, let it direct you to the answer.

Obviously, for the Chevreul pendulum method of hypnosis to work, you can only ask questions that would result in a "yes", "no", or "maybe" answer. As you can imagine, developing a list of questions to use with this method takes a little bit of time and practice so do not allow yourself to get frustrated. While some people interested in hypnosis do not want to mess with the Chevreul pendulum method, keep in mind that it can be highly beneficial. In fact, people who use ideomotor hypnosis find it to be very rewarding.

Just remember that overworking the subconscious mind can cause it to become weary. When that occurs, you will not get the answers you want. In addition, you may find the pendulum will not even move. If you are faced with this, then just take a break. Ideomotor and the Chevreul pendulum method of hypnosis does take practice and endurance so be patient
