Using Hypnosis For Dealing With Pain
January 7th, 2009

For people living with chronic pain, life can be miserable. Today, millions of people go through daily life, dealing with some level of pain. Typically, people will turn to medication to help alleviate the problem, which in some cases is a good treatment option. However, if you live with pain and find the standard avenue for treatment is not working, we have a recommendation that is giving people just like you much-needed relief. Hypnosis has been used for thousands of years for this very thing, pain relief. With techniques being fine-tuned, and hypnotists and hypnotherapist undergoing long hours of training to hone their skills, this is actually an excellent option.

Waking up every day facing pain is both frustrating and discouraging. Unfortunately, this is reality for many people, whether born with congenital defects, having been in a car accident, or suffering from a debilitating illness such as Multiple Sclerosis or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Keep in mind that pain is a warning sign that something is going on in the body. Therefore, if you have new pain, the first thing you need to do is see a healthcare professional to ensure nothing major is occurring within the body. Then, once a diagnosis is made, many hypnotists and hypnotherapists will require you get a written referral from your physician so be sure to ask.

Today, we see more and more healthcare professionals providing support to hypnosis and cooperation between doctor and hypnotist. The interesting thing about hypnosis and pain is that sometimes, hypnosis will be used to help alleviate the pain while other times, it will be used to identify any subconscious cause for the symptom. For this, you would see the term hypnoanalgesis, which means controlled feeling and hypnoanesthesia without feeling.

With hypnosis, not only will you experience relief from pain but also find yourself feeling relaxed. Through a number of studies, we now that while pain signals are still sent to the brain through the reflex sympathetic nervous system, hypnosis is capable of teaching the brain to avoid those signals. The result is that pain sensation is blocked out. Take arthritis pain for example, hypnosis can help provide relief by teaching you how to use the power of your mind to lower pain perception.

If you live with chronic pain, you need to be careful with traditional pain management. With this, the brain habituates to pain killing drugs and over time, higher doses are required to achieve the same thing. On the other hand, with hypnosis the process is much different in that the brain actually stops responding to the pain signals, a much better solution. However, for hypnosis to work for pain management, specific skills must be learned. Many times, a professional hypnotist or hypnotherapist will guide you through the process so you can use the techniques at home to continue pain management.

Hypnosis is also highly beneficial for people with hip and knee pain. For instance, with hip pain, this could be the result of a number of things. Again, you want to have your doctor determine the cause but from that point on, hypnosis can help provide much-needed relief. In fact, many people who are sick and tired of taking drugs for hip pain or those that find traditional treatment ineffective are turning to hypnosis. For knee pain, hypnosis can provide quick relief, meaning drugs can be avoided, giving the individual back his or her mobility. The possibilities with hypnosis are incredible so if you live with chronic pain, what do you have to lose
