When a parent at home notices a problem with their child's speech, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the situation. This can be an early indication of an impending learning disability. If the child just does not seem to grasp the common and basic fundamentals of language, it also can be a sign, and something to keep tabs on. This is an easy way to get a good understanding of where your child could be in a year or two as far as development is concerned.

Most often, it is the parent at home with the child that sees a situation develop that gets their attention. However, it is usually a teacher that can best pin point exactly where the problem lies. Many times it is when the child is confined to their seat, in a classroom setting that the problem becomes most noticeable. When a child has a learning disability, they are pretty much in a very personal space. They are really not willing to let people in to detect what the problem really is. By catching these issues early, you make for an easier transition from the home setting to the classroom. By monitoring your child's behavior prior to the child entering public education, you can in turn pick up on small details that may signal to you there is a slowing of the development in the child. If they are fidgety, and have no real desire to pick up a book, this may be an indication of a learning disability. If you can pick out any odd behaviors, or methods of processing information from your child it again may indeed be able to show you an early sign to a disorder.
By detecting a possible learning disorder early on in the child's development, you can stand a really good chance at either nipping it in the bud, or at least getting a good handle on it prior to the child entering school and in turn having a difficult time. There are many specialists who can help in this situation; they are generally referred by your general practitioner, or by your pediatrician. Once the appointment is set and you get in to see them, they will then assess the child and run a series of defined tests, to amass the condition and what the symptoms are. From this point, they will have a better understanding on what course of action to take. At this time it is possible for the specialist to test for any number of conditions that may be underlying, such as Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, or Dyspraxia. Naturally the common tests would include ADD and ADHD. This is just to rule out any further conditions that may not be known about. There are certain treatments such as medications however; generally it is special education that is the first and foremost plan of attack.
The inclusion of teaching aides in the household have proven for a great way of curbing a learning disorder in young preschool children. Working with the children with tools such as flash cards, that keep the child's memory fresh, or word association games, that challenge the child to think and keep in their memory, the simple words and phrases that make up complete sentences. If the child is not worked with at a young age, for development and correction on learning disabilities, the effects will be most noticeable and in turn be detrimental to schooling. The teachers see a great many children in their tenure as teachers. They see many disorders and learning disabilities come their way. The problem is, they do not really have the time to solely dedicate to one student, in order to tend to their condition. They have many to a class that really do need attention as well. This makes it hard for the teacher to aide in the student's advancement. This is where the special education classes come into play, they are smaller by scale and have more opportunities for attended care by a special education teacher. The level of disruption is greatly decreased as well, as the class tends to be away from all the main noisy classrooms
