Ditropan XL is prescribed to treat an overactive bladder. It is an antispasmodic agent and as such it decreases the involuntary muscle spasms in the bladder which causes the urge to urinate frequently. The generic name of this drug is Oxybutinin Chloride.
What is an overactive bladder?
An overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition resulting from the sudden involuntary contraction of the muscles in the urinary bladder. This causes sudden and frequent urges to urinate. OAB is also referred to as urinary incontinence. In severe cases, the patient is unable to control of his bladder causing leakage or wetting accidents.
This condition usually occurs in older adults but it is not supposed to be regarded as a normal part of aging.
Ditropan XL and OAB
Ditropan XL is administered to control the symptoms of OAB. It uses osmotic pressure to release oxybutinin chloride into the body at regular intervals over a twenty-four-hour period. Oxybutinin Chloride then relaxes the muscles of the bladder and inhibits the frequent involuntary spasms which causes the urinary incontinence.
Safety information
The effects and safety of Ditropan XL in children has not been confirmed yet. Extreme caution is advised when administering the drug to children six years old and below. Older adults who are on this medication must also be closely monitored because they are more sensitive to the adverse effects of the drug. While there are no reports of possible harmful effects on the fetus, pregnant women should consult with their physician before taking the drug. The same rule applies for breastfeeding mothers. It is not yet known whether the drug is secreted in human milk so the risks haven't been defined yet as far as this is concerned. If you are breastfeeding, then it is advised that you talk to your physician about the risks of taking the medicine while lactating. In cases where medication cannot be avoided, you may have to go with an alternative feeding method for your baby.
Taking other medications aside from Ditropan XL can affect the effectiveness of the drug so it is strongly advised that you talk to your physician first before taking this drug. Other medications that could alter the effects of Ditropan XL include antibiotics, antifungal medications, and other antispasmodic agents.
This is also not a prescribed treatment for patients who are also suffering from glaucoma, urinary and/or gastric retention, and other gastrointestinal conditions.
