Elocon cream is an ointment that is mostly used for inflammatory skin disorders. The active ingredient of Elocon cream is mometasone furoate—a medicine called corticosteroid. This means that Elocon can reduce inflammation of the skin due to irritations caused by the release of different substances that are crucial for your immune system. Those substances widen your blood vessels, which irritate certain areas of your body, making them swollen, red, painful, and itchy. Once you apply Elocon cream on infected areas, it works from the inside to lessen the release of inflammatory substances. The result is a reduction on the itching, redness, and swelling.

Moisturizing

Those with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis are the ones who commonly use Elocon cream. It has oil as its moisturizing base to prevent water evaporation from your skin. The moisturizing effect of the cream reduces itching, scaling, and dryness.

A few warnings

Be careful on long-term usage on raw skin, large areas of your skin, under airtight dressings, or skin folds since those areas tend to absorb the formula more. This can lead to risks of thinning of the skin and decrease in the production levels of hormones from your adrenal glands. Long-term usage should be avoided especially on children.

Safety precautions on Elocon

Remember that the cream is for external use only. If it is prescribed by your doctor to treat psoriasis, make sure to have a regular check up with them because there are chances where it can worsen your condition or cause it to relapse after initial treatment. The common side effects of using the cream include acne, stretch marks, thinning of the skin, too much hair growth, pins-and-needles sensation, and change in your skin pigmentation.

Application

Elocon cream should be applied as directed by your physician but normally, it should be applied evenly and thinly only on the affected areas. You should avoid contact with the eyes or other moist membranes but when that happens, rinse immediately with cold water. Wash your hands thoroughly after application unless the hands are the ones being treated.

Reminders

The cream should not be used longer than 5 days if you are applying it on your face or on children. However, if you are using it for your face or on children, make sure not to cover the treated areas to prevent the risk of side effects caused by too much absorption on the skin. If your skin gets infected during treatment, stop the application and report the incident to your doctor so they can prescribe you with antibiotics instead.
