Gemfibrozil Lopid is a medicine for modifying your cholesterol and lipids. Doctors prescribe Gemfibrozil Lopid for patients who need to reduce their triglyceride levels and increase their cholesterol levels being carried in HDL or high density lipoprotein in their blood.

HDL is known as the "good" cholesterol since higher concentrations of this element in your blood are associated with the reduction of risks for heart disease. It is found that a decrease in your triglycerides is partially caused by the decreased release levels of that component from your fat tisues.

Dosage

A study showed that Gemfibrozil Lopid may decrease your risk from heart attacks but it did not affect the way a person can survive or cope with high cholesterol levels. Tablets are available in 600mg doses and are prescribed for people with low HDL and high triglyceride concentrations that can cause pancreatitis. It is usually taken twice per day, 30 minutes before meals.

With other cholesterol-reducing drugs

When used with other drugs used for reducing cholesterol levels, it can increase your risk for a condition known as rhabdomyolysis where your muscles can break down. This can cause possible kidney damage due to chemicals from muscle breakdown, as well as muscle aches.

Other drug interactions

Gemfibrozil lopid also affects the way other certain drugs are received into your system. For instance, when taken with warfarin (Coumadin), it can increase its effect which leads to bleeding. If you are diabetic, the drug may also increase your risk for having low blood sugar levels when taken with glucose-reducing medication. Meanwhile, drugs like cholestyramine (Questran) and colestipol (colestid) reduces the effectiveness of Gemfibrozil since it affects the way your body absorbs it.

On pregnancy

There is not enough reports on toxicity and effects on pregnant women and their newborn babies since these concerns are not yet well studied. However, if you are pregnant, consult with your doctor first before getting a prescription for Gemfibrozil. Remember that it should only be used by pregnant women only when the benefit is able to justify its potential risks for the fetus.

Side effects

The commonly observed side effects of Gemfibrozil Lopid for some patients include diarrhea, upset stomachs, nausea, tiredness, and vomiting. However, take note that the severity and the onset of those side effects depend on who is taking them. Other less common side effects include muscle pains, aches, tenderness, and weakness. Consult your doctor if any side effects are becoming troublesome.
