Duricef is a brand name for the antibiotic cefadroxil. This is a common cephalosporin-type of medication that is used to treat mild bacterial infections like strep throat, urinary tract infections and pharyngitis.

Dosage

Duricef medication should only be administered in cases where in the infection is evidently caused by susceptible bacteria. This antibiotic cannot treat all other infections resulting from fungi, virus or parasites.

You need to take Duricef as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage varies across the type of infection being treated. The usual dosage for minor infections is one to two grams a day in single or divided doses. For children, the recommended daily dose is 30mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight. Due to a higher risk of hypersensitivity to the antibiotic, the doctor may prescribe a lower dose for older adults.

Safety information

Proper safety precautions should be observed when taking Duricef. Patients suffering from kidney disorders and gastrointestinal diseases should be closely monitored throughout the duration of the Duricef medication. Same rule applies to pregnant women. While there have been no studies that can prove that this drug is harmful to unborn babies, it is still advised that you consult your doctor before taking the drug. The antibiotic is also known to contaminate human milk so if you're breastfeeding, you may want to go with an alternative infant feeding program. You'll need to stop breastfeeding until your medication is finished.

Duricef and birth control pills

Just like most antibiotics, Duricef medication may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills which could cause you to get pregnant. Your doctor can prescribe a more effective birth control method while you're taking antibiotics.

Other medications

You also need to inform your doctor about other medications that you're taking aside from Duricef. Some drugs and herbal products may interfere with the antibiotic so it's best to give your doctor a heads-up about them in case you need to stop other medications temporarily.

Additional information

You need to take the Duricef medication throughout the prescribed duration to ensure effectiveness. Prolonged use of the product more than what is necessary can cause your body to produce bacteria that are immune to the effects of the antibiotic. The same thing can happen if you stop with the medication earlier than recommended so make sure to keep taking the drug even if you feel that the infection is already treated.
