Flomax medication contains tamsulosin, an alpha blocker used in providing symptomatic treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It functions not by reducing the size of the prostate but rather by relaxing the arteries and veins in the body so that blood can easily pass through them. The condition is characterized by hyperplasia of the prostatic stromal and the epithelial cells, resulting into the formation of rather large but discrete nodules found in the periurethral area of the prostate. When they are big enough, the nodules can constrict the urethral canal, causing partial or in some cases, the complete urethral obstruction. This obstruction of the urethra disrupts the normal urine flow that can lead to symptoms of urinary hesitancy, increased risks for urinary track infection, more frequent urination, and urinary retention. Although antigen levels that are specific to prostates may experience an increase in patients diagnosed with the condition, benign prostatic hyperplasia isn't considered to be a lesion that is premalignant because of inflammations caused by urinary tract infections and increase in size.

Flomax medication is an approved means of treating male urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
