Alesse (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) is a drug used to prevent pregnancy for purposes of birth control. The contraceptive pill contains female hormones which are combined to prevent ovulation, i.e. the release of the egg from the ovary, in women. Another function of the drug is to change the uterine lining and cervical mucous in women, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the uterus or even making it difficult for an already fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. The drug is marketed under other brand names too, such as Aviane, Levlite, Levlen, Levota, Tri-leven, Triphasil, Trivora and Triphasil-28.
Usage precautions
The contraceptive pill pack is designed according to a prescribed cycle and must therefore be used regularly and on time. Missing a pill can lead to pregnancy or may require some adjustments to be made in the intake of the pills.
Precautions
The drug must not be used by women who are pregnant or those who have recently had a child. Other sets of women who are advised to avoid the contraceptive pill, Alesse, are those who have a history of medical problems such as heart problems, blood clots, blood circulation problems (especially those which have been caused by diabetes), uterine or breast cancer (cancers related to hormones), high blood pressure, abnormal menstrual bleeding and liver problems. During the initial days of using Alesse, it is also advisable to have a back-up plan which may include spermicides and condoms. The chances of developing heart problems while using the drug is increased if the user smokes or is above the age of 35. It must also be kept in mind that the effectiveness of such birth control pills can be hampered by other medicines; such interactions can lead to pregnancy. So, it is advised that the user inform the doctor beforehand about any other medicines she is taking, including the over-the-counter medicines and daily vitamin and mineral supplements. The doctor must also be consulted prior to using a new medication.
Side effects
Some side effects have been observed among the users of the contraceptive pill Alesse, including birth defects and a slowing down in the production of breast milk. The contraceptive pill may harm a nursing baby if the pill is absorbed through the breast milk. So, it is advisable to avoid taking Alesse if the user is nursing a child. Other side effects include depression, numbness and swelling, increased growth of hair, mild nausea, darkening of skin or even problems with wearing contact lenses.
